CP use is becoming very impractical. If you are trying to train a 12SL player, you need to play him 13 games and CP him 13 times.


Coaching needs to be less strenuous.

Okay, so I got that wrong. So that means if a 12 SL player wants to go to 13, he uses 13 CP? But can get all of that done in one.mathc ?

Looks like there is no schedule in Rusty XI. Everything you log ij, it sometimes say 7 days till next match, 1 day 32 minutes till next match or matches In progress. But at the end of everything there is no result?


Is the commissioner teasing us with this dance of his?

Are we paying him 1000 BZ per week for nothing ?

We need answers....regarding game scheduling, low scores, non auction bids and and others.

Answer now please commissioner,  why can't you be more like Adam Silver

Last match of the season, is undoubtedly between the two best teams.


The other two insignificant teams will have to battle it out for last and one before the last.

Mr Jha who had spies at the Mansfield Utd ground will be under close watch by the football association.

While Mr Dahal will try his best to get to the opposition box.

Mr Bidur will fight against the very handover Dr Gunaratne in this seasons finale. Whatever happens it has been an amazing season for Mansfield and they will be champions again

It was very obvious at the start of the season who was going to win the league. Except for that one loss against the manager who he trained at Havelocks ( I keep forgetting his name) where they had spies at the Mansfield ground, Mansfield utd was a juggernaut.


Match after match, with their stupendous defense, pin point passing and a fury of attacking finishes some pundits felt Mansfield was in a different league by themselves.

Former assistant manager at Havelocks, Mr Jha had an okay season and finished two before the last. 

Mr Bidur, who tried to play attacking with ful football with full aggression against a Well oiled MAN team was ripped apart on.the final game.

There was one other team, which was not noticed by many teams since they virtually did not have a striker or a forward ended up dead last. With dead being the key word here.

All in all we must thank the commissioner Mr Spiky for conducting the matches. Also thank him for being patient with us.

But we need a proper league, with more teams and much more banter.

Hope Mr Spiky will be able to do that with a proper laptop also. And also to help Mr Dahal cheat and score a goal.

The result of the very first game came our to be a shocking Defeat  to the Morecambe Manager.

He has no words what just happened on the pitch..... He pointed out the only fault was in the commissioner's mal intent  and nothing else.

The commissioner's intention is not good ,as one of the managers is finding out for himself.
The Morecambe's manager wanted to post the details of foul play against him and his team by the writing on the ONSIDE ,but he was deprived of doing so by not letting him write on onside . As of now there is a rumor that he is not able to log in to the Onside .
If he is able to crack the lock 🔒 then we all might have good time reading about actually what happened !!!!

It's amazing to have two teams with their Forwards tying their boots in wrong legs , talking about no other than game between MOR vs OLD ...This rusty season no one is more rusted than the forwards of these teams...The fans hope that they at least see a goal 🥅 from either end...but most predicted it to be a 0-0 draw.

The Frustrated managers of MOR and Old were not enough in this league were not enough so one more manager has been added to the list...Mr Gunaratne.

Why are goals so hard to come by? Did the strikers forget to put up their scoring boots or the managers are very defensive in their approach???
The later one seems to be less explanable as the team management send their team to win each and every game... Everytime !!!

The Morecambe's manager was seen furious after the game in the post match interview.

After the match one question that provoked him was "are you happy with the draw?"
 "We don't play for draw!!!" Was his reply and left the interview in the middle.
    With the legacy he follows, that of Sir Alex Furgusion...he repeated his saying but unlike his words like Furgusion; his team plays like that managed under José Mourinho... happy with a draw.
  The approach towards the game should be changed ...not by managers but by the commissoner is the need of the time.
Fingers pointing at the commissoner at the moment something might come up in the next game.

It's obvious that MOR manager is facing an uphill task( CAR) this game week . To cool off the heat and put doubt in his counterpart he (MOR manager) is deliberately delaying to deploy his line up... Long ball for him is the weapon 🔪 that he might fire at CAR are they able to turn the tables around?

But the important question is ,will the MOR's strikers have tied their laces right ????

With the Ferocity they played ,it was heart breaking to end up with only one point by the end of 90 mins between MOR vs CAR. The game was one sided for most of the times with MOR being dominant for most of the times they managed to let go of two points they had up their sleeves... This was a huge week the last games before the finals....

There were few boo's heard for the OLD manager as his strikers are still not finding their skoring boots...to his dismay he's been blamed for the tactics that don't let them score...
On the otherhand Mr RH. Gunaratne was over confident before the match as in his press conference he openly challenged the MOR 's manager Mr. R.K Jha when he disclosed his tactics publically...  Mr Jha took that blow and responded well on the pitch.....he must have talked to his players letting them know how good will it feel to get a win , not for points but for the pride. The players responded , the manager made a change in the third quarter,and with the last kick of the match from penalty kick...scored the only goal 🥅 .
Mr.N.H. Gunaratne paid the price for his overconfidence after all.

This was a great experience to all the managers who played after so many years in the pilot league. This was a success for the commissoner and the participating managers. 

As we all say , Good things must come to the end ,so will be this league with last game still to be played. Most importantly the league must continue in the near future with all the lost managers ...

Last game of the season and the managers are getting over exited with their performance. 

One of the Manager Mr Gunaratne went too far ahead of time announcing two best team of the the season...
 We don't disagree about the situation right now but theoretically other team managed by Mr Jha has a slight hope at the end of the season to top the group.
What if the top 2 play a draw and Mr Jha sneaks a victory ✌️..with a good goal difference?
 This is the same hope that the Indians had before the game between NZ and AFG.... nevertheless there is a ray of hope before the last games are played..... Theoretically !!!
So it is too soon to disclose the winner beforehand... Theoretically i.e !!!!

With the games being played at different venues, each manager had eye on the other. MOR did their best( thanks to OLD for not scoring) ,but not enough to turn the table upside down. A draw they were looking for not arriving from CAR vs MAN game had them undone.

With a win over CAR { with change of tactics..L to N ; not announcing prematurely (lesson learnt)} MAN has been the winner this pilot season too.
Congratulations to Mr. Gunaratne for this achievement. 
Well played the other managers esp Mr Jha for getting better result one after another . 
Mr Bidur lost his way in the mid season after a great start and Mr Sumit never had a start...

Getting down to business, the aim of this 4-teams pilot league will be to quickly play 6 rounds of matches to see how the new game engine, gameplay rules and the  different website features work...Will be expecting constant feedback on all aspects of the game. If it all goes well, or if we come across issues which we can either fix or simply disregard, we will then get some of the other 6-8 old managers back and resume with full season of Rusty League with the original team names. If things dont work out in the pilot, we will simply blame the pandemic, never text "the other 6-8 old managers" and go back to what we were doing. The website, by the way, will remain online!!

This 4-teams pilot league is supposed to be testing grounds and a stress test for the league and the website...so log in, look around, try features and different match orders, and see if and how things work.  

This ain't time to worry about points or bank balance!! That time will come, soon for some, never for others..also the "stats" from this pilot league will not be counted in the overall records...

Identified Issues - Week 2

Something is SERIOUSLY wrong with this engine - my team cant seem to score, let alone win!! 


But on a serious note, a few issues identified on week 2 of matches...

1. Coaching has not worked as intended it seems. Will be deep diving into that soon.
2. There were some issues with correctly displaying match results on "League Summary" and "Club Profile" page...has been temporarily fixed. and results should display correctly.

Unsure what you mean by that...basically how Coaching is supposed to work is this:


To coach a skill level 12 player, he can be coached in ONE match itself as long as he plays for 45 minutes. The number of Coaching Points [CP] used will be the new skill level he will attain after coaching, in this case 13.  This system of coaching was designed so that it would be more "expensive" to coach higher skill level players than lower skill level players. So managers would have to make that decision if they wanted a team with many above-average skilled players OR a team with a few very-high skilled players and other average players!!


On a side note, the issue with coaching I had mentioned in my last post has been fixed.

Yeah, any player can be coached in any of his skills during a match to increase that skill level by 1...the player has to play for more than 45 minutes in the match. The number of CP's used will be the new skill level achieved. So in your example it will be 13.

There still seems to be issues with deducting the cost of the extra-CP slots used in a match and displaying it correctly on team finance page. I thought I had fixed it last time. Will be working on that and expect that to be easy fix.

Rant ahead..


First up, the only laptop I have ever owned just died this week...my faithful Macbook Pro spanned '3 decades' - late 2000's, whole of 2010's and died in 2021...I naturally paused my computing for a day, more as a mark of the ONLY DAY I didn't use a computer since I got the MacBook was the day it died...wait for Apple to announce a gorgeous new Macbook pro in the next few weeks!!


MATCH SCHEDULES
We have not set any fixed schedule for the matches for this pilot season because I feel the managers are doing me a favor by agreeing to be part of this meaningless pilot...my original plan was to run the whole pilot season in 2 weeks and then move on to a full league season, but that has not happened for a variety of reasons..I tend to wait for all 4 managers to save their lineups before I run the matches. Even right now for Match 4, only MAN and OLD have their lineup saved!


LOW SCORES
Hard to say why. May be we started with very low SL players with goalkeepers at par or even better skilled than the average striker. But again, that is just a wild guess..I will have to delve deeper, but the maths behind the engine are solid and it will have to do with just the way we have designed the starting teams.


AGGRESSION
Current aggression feature is more subtle than it was in old Rusty. I kind of liked the old aggression myself. But sadly we are stuck with this one.  Have original programmer's maths behind the working of the feature here


CANCELING TRADE OFFERS
That feature does not exist at this time. I will have to code that in when I have time. 


AUCTION
The currently listed auction was never intended but was just left behind from my solo sessions before the Pilot. Having said that, plan to run an Auction in the next few weeks to ensure it works as intended. 


PLAYER WAGE
Plenty of explanation as well as whitepaper discussion in the HELP section. But I will repeat them here as well.

The amount of wage to be paid to a player every week is given by the following formulae at this time. This can be tweaked in very different ways. 
For Goalkeepers: Wage=St X St X (St+3) X 6 (Where St is the “shot-stopping skill level) 
For all other outfield players: Wage= [main skill X main skill X (main skill+3) X 6] + [secondary skill X secondary skill X main skill X 5] + [tertiary skill X tertiary skill x secondary skill X 5]

Reason Wages feature is in the game:
SWOT Discussion: 
- Additional check on skill level bloat as it costs slightly more to have a high skill than a low skill level player in the team. 
- Player loan becomes a worthwhile option. 
- Opportunity to have a very functional and meaningful game economy by adjusting weekly wage burden on teams. 

In a nutshell, WAGES is a highly modifiable parameter that is meant to help achieve some control over the game money and is intended for two major focus of new Rusty: discourage very high skilled players AND maintain a well balanced game economy. 


Lastly, COMMISSIONER'S SALARY
1000 BZ per week sounds hefty? Bezant is valued extremely low against the US dollars. Life is expensive! No wonder Mr Silver does a better job given his pay!!

Interesting, but something I had completely forgotten about...it just looks like the way the engine is designed. I will try to find the original documentation of the engine to confirm that but fairly sure GK do not lose any fitness.  Which in a way makes sense, because GKs usually end up playing most matches in real life too. But also somehow feels strange to us in Rusty who are so used to managing player fitness/EL.


There are few implications of the fact btw:
1. A GK will be able to play most matches in a season. Unless of course he picks up random injury or gets suspended.

2. Also, a GK will always play at 100% of his raw Skill Level unlike other outfielders.


Now that is how the default game engine is. I can of course write some external code and try to manipulate that to make a GK lose "some" fitness at the end of each match. Now we as a group have to decide two things:
1. Do we want a GK's fitness to decrease at the end of the match depending on the number of minutes on the field? 
2. If yes, by what factor/percentage?

Identified Issues - Week 4

Everything ran pretty smoothly this week except a few non-game-breaking issues: 

1. CAR's lineup this week had two players who were no more with the team but rather had been traded away previously.  Reportedly Bidur had loaded his lineup from match #2. In such a scenario, I need to manually remove and replace these players. 
NEED A FIX - when a manager loads up an old lineup and tries to save it, to check and ensure that all the players in the lineup are still available.  

2. J_Riley (MAN) could not be coached as MAN ran out of CPs. However the player's PU increased by 1. NEED A FIX.

3. NEED A MASSIVE FIX and score our first goal of the season!!

Fixed - Load Lineup & Match Viewer

Managed to fix a few things:


1. Injured/Suspended players are not available to be picked in the Online Teamsheet Creator.

2. When loading old lineups, players who are currently injured/suspended/unavailable (eg traded away since that old lineup was made) will be omitted automatically.  Will save me so much time trying to fix Bidur's lineups in the future!!

3. Match Viewer now displays the booked/sent off players on the correct team header.  Btw, how many of you actually use Match Viewer feature? It is honestly one of the best pieces of code I have ever written; so good that I have used it in my sim cricket project too!!

Easy enough to implement but this will be counterproductive. If anything, we should be encouraging managers to trade players...

"Naming" is a "bid checking" mechanism in these auctions as a duplicate name voids that bid. For eg, you want just one item in an Auction; you place bids on three different items listed but give them the same name. Once you win a bid, your other bids cannot win since you have applied duplicate name break!!

Only a BIG one, OLD cannot score a goal...none so far!!

But that was a beautiful week with no issues identified...all ran smoothly and as expected...new Lineup Creator seems to be coming along nicely as well and expect some further updates soon.

Feedback Time - Part 1

As we draw towards the end of the pilot season, please feel free to give your feedback about this whole new experimental season....what worked, what did not work, what you would like changed? Just overall thought on things in "Feedback Time - Part 1".


These feedback will give some idea about things as it is, but fixes or changes might not actually be possible...


As for me, it worked perfectly and way better and smoother than I imagined...I am super proud of the technical part of things I managed to do with the engine and the website, and we were able to identify and fix a few important issues..
As for gameplay side of things, we can still go about tweaking things, and that is something we will discuss about specifically on Part 2 of this Feedback Time. Rusty continues to be a resource management game in the form a football league. For resource management gameplay, getting the right balance of income and expense through right pricing of things like gate receipts, CPs and wages will be the key. Similarly for football managerial gameplay, finding right balance between the strength and weaknesses of different game tactics will be important. Thankfully, the system in this new version is built in a way that all of those components are modifiable to achieve the right balance. We will talk about those specific in the next part of the feedback.

Congrats to Rumi and his team Mansfield Town on a well deserved title win..once again, proves that actually putting some thought into your team and lineup can yield good results.  This was a far cry from how things panned out for Oldham Athletic!!

Identified Issues - Week 6

Week 6  HAD one major error which saw the new Lineup Creator not saving the starting team tactics...also looks like a few players were incorrectly numbered by the code, and teams might have had unexpected substitutions or position changes....

This was NOT A BUG but simply that I forgot to make necessary changes to the ever-changing Lineup Creator codes...the issue has been identified and fixed.  My bad..sorry, I was focussing too hard on SCORING!

What next?

With that week 6, our pilot season has concluded. The following will happen next:


1. I will finally get my own laptop. So I expect to do more coding at odd hours. I am coding  for some "player personality/character" to be woven into these players. It's a big ambitious and utterly meaningless feature, but I need to channel my frustrations of a goalless season into something..

2. Will squash out the obvious issues that have cropped up. Not too many of those thankfully.

3. Will expect to hear from you guys' feedback. Crucial. Areas I am particularly looking at is the "finances" aspect and the "strategy" aspect. Both of those are highly modifiable and important we get a good balance. We at least need to get the cost of CPs at the start of the season correct. 

4. We resume the full fledged Rusty League next. Will bring back the old team names complete with all the overall stats and all. Need to start reaching out to the old managers. Hopefully we will have 8-12 total managers back.

Were you even aware of the Youth Academy feature that was working like a clockwork in the background? The easiest way to check it is from  each club's main landing page...


I feel Youth Academy are one of the best new features in the league and allows for a varied and alternate way of team building...the plan is to further optimize this feature over time.

Funny enough, the only team that didn't have a youth player (Age 1 and 2) with skill level rise through a Youth Academy system this last week was MAN...every other team had 1-2 players...check them out from their club landing page. 


Also, as it stands, the 1-star Youth Academies which add 56 constant abilities and up to 84 random abilities to a Youth Player's primary skill, it can take anywhere between 5 weeks (700/56+84) to 13 weeks (700/56+0) for a skill level rise.  If you fund for a 2-star Youth Academies which add 84 constant abilities and up to 112 random abilities to the primary skill, it can take anywhere between 4 weeks (700/84+112) to 9 weeks (700/84+0) for a skill level rise. And if you fund for a 3-star Youth Academies which add 112 constant abilities and up to 167 random abilities to the primary skill, it can take anywhere between 3 weeks (700/112+167) to 7 weeks (700/112+0) for a skill level rise. 
As you see, a club may have a breakthrough talent coming through the ranks rapidly. 
There is also a possibility that a player's secondary and tertiary skills develop significantly (and sometimes even more predominantly than the primary skill) as these young players come through the Youth Academy. 


For now, these Youth Academy reports reflect only the weekly changes/event but I will try to design something to show the cumulative progress over the whole season. 

Like I mentioned, Youth Academies have huge untapped potential for the gameplay, web design and overall engagement.

ADDED a nice visualization to show the "training session rating" for all the youth players (age 1 and 2) under a club's Youth Academy. Basically the "training session rating" will show what percentage of the possible ability points for each of the skill were gained by each youth player through training at the academy. It could also be construed to mean "how hard did a player push himself in training"!!

Have coded a few more things (during my night shifts no less) for an Enhanced Player Profile page. This is still a work in progress, and for now have added a whole new section called "Coaching & Training", which will basically be a snapshot into the player's progress in terms of his coaching and training. 


It consists of three parts at this time:

1. A feature that will track a player's gains and losses in his abilities for different skills over his entire career across seasons. I am SO proud of this feature that I am going to give it a name and even "trademark it: Ability CurveTM   (more about Ability Curve on a separate dedicated post)

2. A summary table for the current season as well as the player's entire career detailing the number of times a player was coached (through coaching points) and cumulative abilities gained through training in Youth Academies. 

3. Youth Players will also have a visualization showing their weekly training session rating (TSR).  


For anyone feeling overwhelmed with all these, these features DO NOT EFFECT the actual game/gameplay. They just highlight things/math happening under the hood for each player and make all these numbers feel more granular and, hopefully, add a narrative to each player. This is part of the broader goal to add player personality/character.

A nice addition: Player Records under the "Record Section", available from the top menu. This will display the current season and career stats for the players with opportunities to play around with the stats. 


With that, the website has completed sql-database migration of all game data, and will be available along side similar records for clubs, managers and matches.

Ability Curve will track the changes in a player's abilities and skill levels over time across different seasons. 


As a quick recap, a player has different abilities and skill levels for each of the four skills in the game: Shot stopping, Tackling, Passing and Shooting.  Skill levels are used during matches, abilities are not. Skill levels are  gained by coaching and  lost with post-season aging. Abilities are gained by training through Youth Academies and also gained or lost depending on things a player does during an actual match. When a player gains 1000 ability points,  the corresponding skill level increases by 1. And when a player loses 1000 ability points,  the corresponding skill level decreases by 1.  

In mathematical terms, 1000 abilities make 1 skill level. 

For any particular skill, the player's skill level and abilities can therefore be represented with a single number in terms of total abilities. For example a player with Shooting skill level of 12 and Shooting abilities of 300 can be said to have a total of (12 x 1000 + 300) = 12,300 abilities for Shooting. 

Ability Curve will track the changes in a player's abilities and skill levels  across time reflected as total abilities. Going forward, any time  a player's skill level or abilities change, it will be captured automatically in the database and  reflected on the Ability Curve!!

For demonstration purposes only, I have gone back and manually added some of these data points for the players who were coached past season. These data points are not entirely accurate of how things happened, and is only meant to be a demo of things to come.

Identified Issues - Week 1

Overall, week-1 of matches ran pretty smoothly and did not throw too many surprises or glitches. But  a couple of issues identified so far:

1. Extra-CP slot used in a match was supposed to cost 25 k each. However that did not happen during week-1 matches. Needs fixing.



2. Some of the teams submitted lineups that threw some errors or new insights.

MOR submitted a lineup with the following formation:
 1 GK - 3 DF - 2 DM - 2 MF - 1 AM - 2 FW

One of the conditional orders was meant to change the position of a FW to MF if MIN >= 60 AND SCORE >= 2. 

However this threw error since that condition would have meant MOR would have 6 players in midfield position : 2 DM + 2 MF + 1 AM plus the 1 FW who was asked to move to MF per that conditional order. Remember, a team can have 2-5 players in midfield. Same with defenders. 

Important to be mindful of these restrictions, not only when constructing the starting 11 but also all other conditional orders.
